Cyprus is expecting great improvement in the public transport system from summer 2010. Nearly 45 Million Euro are to be invested in order to upgrade the Cyprus bus network. These measures are taken in order to lessen the traffic congestion as well as to facilitate travelling of the people between towns and within city centres. Communications Minister Nicos Nicolaides stated: “We’ve designated June 1, 2010 as a landmark for public transport in Cyprus… a new era…with new routes and extended hours". Over 60% of the bus drivers are supporting the new scheme and the rest are welcomed to come aboard. However, those who do not want to take part in the scheme, will receive compensations according to legislation, said the Minister.
